Sentence explanations

  1. 这个节日比我想象的拥挤得多。

This festival is much more crowded than I expected.

    这个
    this
    节日
    festival
    比
    than; compared with
    我
    I; me
    想象
    imagine
    拥挤
    crowded
    得多
    much more
    More detail

这个 means “this” and points to a specific nearby or contextually identified thing. It comes before the noun it describes; 这 is the shorter related form used in many contexts, while 这个 includes the classifier-like element 个 and is common before a countable item. 节日 means “festival” or “holiday.” It is the noun being described here. For example, 这个节日很热闹。 means “This festival is lively.” 比 introduces the standard of comparison. The reusable pattern is A 比 B + adjective, meaning “A is more adjective than B.” Chinese does not inflect the adjective for comparison; 比 marks the comparison instead. 我 is the first-person pronoun “I” or “me.” Here it is the person whose expectation or mental picture supplies the comparison standard. Chinese pronouns do not change for subject versus object in the way English pronouns do; the role is determined by position. 想象 means “imagine.” In this sentence, 我想象的 means “what I imagined” or “what I expected.” The 的 after 想象 links this clause to an understood thing or degree: literally, the festival is being compared with the degree of crowdedness that I imagined. The observed form 想象 is not a special comparative form; it is the verb in this clause. For example, 这比我想象的简单。 means “This is simpler than I imagined.” 拥挤 means “crowded.” It is a descriptive word used after the comparison marker. A related contrast is 宽敞, “spacious,” when the setting allows that contrast. For example, 车站很拥挤。 means “The station is crowded.” 得多 follows the adjective and strengthens the comparison: “much more.” In the pattern 比……+ adjective + 得多, it shows that the difference is large, not merely that one thing is slightly more so. 得 here is a structural particle connecting the adjective with its degree complement; it is not the same as the verb 得, “obtain.” Together, 这个节日 is “this festival,” and 比我想象的 sets up “than what I imagined.” 拥挤得多 says that its crowdedness is much greater. The complete meaning is: “This festival is much more crowded than I expected.”

  2. 把贵重物品放在带拉链的口袋里,不要放在外面的袋子里。

Keep your valuables in a zippered pocket, not in the outside pouch.

    贵重物品

    More detail

贵重物品 means valuable items. 物品 is a general word for an item or article, while 贵重 describes something as valuable or precious. The phrase is plural-like in meaning here, but Chinese nouns generally do not change form to mark number. 放在 means “place/keep in or on.” 放 is the base verb “to put” or “to place,” and 在 introduces the location. A reusable pattern is 放在 + place: 把书放在桌子上。 — “Put the book on the table.” 带拉链的 describes something that has a zipper. 带 means “to have” or “to be equipped with,” and 的 turns the description into a modifier before the noun. The pattern 带 + feature + 的 + noun is reusable: 带把手的箱子 — “a box with a handle.” 口袋 means pocket. In 带拉链的口袋, the full modifier comes before 口袋, so the phrase means “a pocket with a zipper,” or “a zippered pocket.” 不要 means “do not” in a direct negative instruction. It is placed before the verb: 不要打开门。 — “Do not open the door.” Here it combines with the following 放在 to prohibit placing the valuables in the next location. 外面的 means “outside” or “located on the outside.” 外面 is the noun-like location word “outside,” and 的 makes it modify the following noun. In this sentence it describes the pouch as the outside one; it does not describe the valuables. 袋子 means bag or pouch. The phrase 外面的袋子 is therefore “the outside pouch/bag.” The sentence uses the disposal pattern 把 + object + verb + location: 把贵重物品放在带拉链的口袋里. 把 presents 贵重物品 as the object whose placement is being specified. 里 after 口袋 means “inside,” so this chunk says to keep the valuables inside the zippered pocket. The second clause, 不要放在外面的袋子里, repeats the placement verb with 不要 and gives the contrasting location: do not put them inside the outside pouch. Together, the utterance means: “Keep your valuables in a zippered pocket, not in the outside pouch.”

  3. 在音乐让我分心之前,我会换个地方放手机。

I'll move my phone before the music distracts me.

    More detail

在……之前 places one event before another in time. Here, 在 begins the time phrase and 之前 closes it: 在音乐让我分心之前 means “before the music distracts me.” This is a reusable pattern: 在 + event + 之前,.... Example: 在出门之前,我会检查钥匙。 — “Before leaving, I’ll check my keys.” 音乐 means “music.” It is a noun and can serve as the subject of an event, as it does here. 让我分心 describes the music causing the speaker to lose concentration. 让 means “cause/let/make” and is followed by the affected person, 我; 分心 means “become distracted” or “lose concentration.” The structure 让 + person + verb/adjective is reusable. Example: 噪音让我分心。 — “Noise distracts me.” The form 我 is the speaker-object of 让, not the subject of 分心 in this causative structure. 我会 means “I will” here. 我 is “I,” and 会 expresses the speaker’s expected or intended future action in this sentence. It does not itself specify a numeric meaning. Example: 我会早点回来。 — “I’ll come back early.” 换 means “change” or “switch.” In 换个地方, it means switching to a different place. 个 is a general classifier used with the noun 地方; it is not part of the verb 换. 地方 means “place.” The phrase 换个地方 therefore means “switch to another place” or “move to a different place.” Here 个 links the classifier to 地方; the phrase does not identify a particular named place. 放 means “put” or “place.” Its object follows it in 放手机: the speaker will put the phone somewhere. Example: 请把书放在桌子上。 — “Please put the book on the table.” 手机 means “mobile phone” or “cell phone.” It is the object being placed, not the place where it is placed. The destination is understood from 换个地方 and the situation rather than stated as a separate location phrase. Together, 在音乐让我分心之前 sets the deadline, and 我会换个地方放手机 states the planned action before that deadline: “I’ll move my phone before the music distracts me.”

  4. 现在就做。扒手经常留意那些停止注意周围情况的人。

Do it now. Pickpockets often watch for people who stop paying attention.

    现在

    More detail

现在 means “now,” referring to the present time. It is also useful in contrasts such as 现在 “now” versus 以前 “before.” Example: 我现在很忙。 — “I am busy now.” 就 adds the sense of doing something promptly or at this point. With a time expression such as 现在, 现在就 means “right now,” not merely “at some time now.” Example: 我们现在就走。 — “We’ll leave right now.” 做 is the verb “do” or “make.” Here its object is omitted because the action is understood from the situation; the sentence does not itself specify what is to be done. Example: 你先做。 — “You do it first.” The objectless use is therefore not a claim about a particular action. 扒手 means “pickpocket,” a person who steals from someone’s clothing or belongings. It is a noun; 小偷 is a broader word for “thief,” so it is not an exact replacement in every context. 经常 means “often” or “frequently.” It describes repeated occurrence rather than one event happening now. Example: 他经常坐地铁。 — “He often takes the subway.” 留意 means “pay attention to,” “watch for,” or “look out for.” In this sentence, it takes the people being watched for as its object. Example: 请留意出口。 — “Please look out for the exit.” 那些 is a demonstrative meaning “those,” used for identifiable plural people or things, often with some distance in the discourse or situation. It is not the noun itself; the noun being identified appears later in the phrase. Example: 那些书 means “those books.” 停止 means “stop” or “cease.” It introduces an action that comes to an end, here the activity expressed by 注意. Example: 雨停止了。 — “The rain stopped.” With an action, 停止 + verb phrase can describe stopping that activity. 注意 means “pay attention to” or “notice.” In 停止注意周围情况, it is the activity that stops. Do not confuse it with 留意: both can involve attention, but 留意 here describes what the pickpockets do, while 注意 names the attention that the people cease to give. Example: 注意路况。 — “Pay attention to the road conditions.” 周围情况 means “the surrounding situation” or, naturally here, “what is happening around [someone].” 周围 modifies 情况, while 情况 is the noun meaning “situation” or “circumstances.” Example: 先了解周围情况。 — “First understand the situation around you.” 人 means “person” or “people.” In this phrase it is the head noun of 那些……的人: 那些 identifies the people, and the material before 的人 describes which people. The form 人 does not change for singular versus plural; number is understood from context or expressed with other words. Together, 那些停止注意周围情况的人 means “the people who stop paying attention to what is happening around them.” The pattern 那些 + description + 的人 is reusable for identifying people: 那些喜欢音乐的人 means “the people who like music.” Here 经常留意 says that pickpockets often watch for this kind of person, while 现在就做 separately urges the understood action to happen immediately. Thus the utterance gives an immediate instruction and a general warning about the risk associated with ceasing to monitor one’s surroundings.

  5. 我应该把背包背在身前吗?

Should I wear my backpack in front of me?

    我应该
    I should
    背包
    backpack
    背
    carry or wear
    身前
    in front of oneself
    吗

    More detail

我应该 combines 我 “I” with 应该 “should/ought to.” By itself, it states the speaker’s expected or appropriate action; the final 吗 turns the complete sentence into a question. 应该 does not change for person or number. Example: 我应该早点走。— “I should leave early.” 背包 is the noun “backpack.” Here 背 is pronounced bēi, as in the verb meaning “to carry or wear on the back”; this is different from 背 bèi, “back,” in other contexts. Example: 我的背包很重。— “My backpack is heavy.” The second 背 is the verb “to carry or wear an item,” commonly associated with carrying it on the back. Its position can be specified by a location phrase, so 背在身前 means carrying or wearing the item in front of the body rather than leaving the location unspecified. Example: 他背着一个包。— “He is carrying a bag on his back.” The 着 form in that example marks an ongoing state and is not present in the fixed sentence. 身前 means “in front of one’s body” or “in front of oneself.” It functions as a location phrase: 身 means “body,” and 前 means “front.” It does not identify a particular person independently; the relevant person is understood from the sentence, here the speaker indicated by 我. 吗 is a yes-or-no question particle placed at the end of the utterance. It turns the preceding statement into a question without changing the word order. Example: 你应该现在走吗?— “Should you leave now?” Together, 我应该 asks about the speaker’s appropriate action, 背包 identifies the item, 背 expresses carrying or wearing it, and 在身前 places it in front of the body. The final 吗 makes the whole utterance a yes-or-no question: “Should I wear my backpack in front of me?”

  6. 在小吃摊和入口附近,那样会更安全。

That would be safer near the food stalls and entrance gates.

    food stall
    入口
    entrance
    那样
    that way
    会

    更安全
    safer
    More detail

在 … 附近 is a reusable location pattern meaning “near …” or “in the vicinity of ….” 在 introduces the location, while 附近 means “nearby.” For example, 在车站附近 means “near the station.” In the fixed sentence, the words between them are the two locations being linked by 和. 小吃摊 means “food stall” here. 小吃 refers to snacks or light foods, and 摊 is a stall or stand. Together they form a reusable noun phrase for a place selling snacks; the plural meaning in English comes from the context, not from a visible plural ending in Chinese. 入口 means “entrance.” It is a compact noun and can refer to an entrance point; the fixed translation makes the relevant location “entrance gates.” 那样 means “that way” in this sentence. 那 points to something understood in the situation, and 样 contributes the idea of a manner or way. With the preceding question about wearing the backpack in front, it can point to that manner of carrying it, without naming the action again. This is different from simply naming a nearby object with a demonstrative. 会 marks what is expected or projected to happen under the relevant circumstances. In this sentence, the fixed translation uses “would,” so the combination expresses an expected result rather than a bare present fact. For example, 这样会更方便 means “This way would be more convenient.” 更安全 means “safer.” 安全 is the adjective “safe,” and 更 marks a higher degree, giving the comparison “safer.” For example, 晚上这样走更安全 means “Walking this way at night is safer.” Together, 在小吃摊和入口附近 sets the location: “near the food stalls and entrance gates.” 那样 refers to the manner under discussion, 会 presents its expected result, and 更安全 describes that result as safer. The whole utterance therefore means: “That would be safer near the food stalls and entrance gates.”

    More detail

我 means “I” here and is the first-person singular subject. Chinese pronouns do not change for grammatical case, so the same form can serve as “I” or “me” in other roles. Example: 我看书。 — “I read.” 也 means “too” here. It comes after 我 and before 会, adding the speaker’s action to something already relevant: “I, too …” or “I will … too.” 会 means “will” here, expressing a future or expected action. Chinese 会 can have other uses, such as ability or likelihood, but the fixed translation supports the future-action reading. Example: 明天会下雨。 — “It will rain tomorrow.” 把 introduces the object that the speaker presents as being deliberately affected by the following action. A reusable pattern is 把 + object + verb phrase: 我把书放在桌上。 — “I put the book on the table.” 把 itself does not mean “put”; the action comes from the following verb phrase. 钱包 means “wallet.” It functions as one noun here. Example: 钱包在这里。 — “The wallet is here.” 放进 means “put into.” 放 means “put” or “place,” while 进 adds inward direction or the result of entering an interior space. Compare 放 in 我放书。 — “I put the books down,” with 放进 in 我把钥匙放进盒子。 — “I put the keys into the box.” 里面的 modifies the noun that follows and means “inside” or “inner” here. 里/里面 expresses an interior location, and 的 links that modifier to the following noun. Thus 里面的口袋 means “the inside pocket.” Example: 里面的门锁着。 — “The inner door is locked.” 口袋 means “pocket.” It is the destination noun in the 把 ... 放进 ... pattern. Example: 手机在口袋里。 — “The phone is in the pocket.” In the actual order, 我也会 means “I will ... too,” and 把钱包放进里面的口袋 presents the wallet as the object put into the inside pocket. Together, the utterance means: “I’ll put my wallet in the inside pocket too.” The 把 construction highlights the wallet as the affected object, while 进 makes the inward destination explicit.

  8. 这样就更难拿到了。

That way it is harder to reach.

    这样
    this way; like this
    更难
    harder; more difficult
    拿到
    reach; get hold of
    More detail

这样 means “this way” or “in this manner.” Here it is an adverbial phrase describing the method or situation just mentioned; it does not itself identify the thing being reached or obtained. A reusable pattern is 这样 + clause: 这样会更方便。—“This way it will be more convenient.” 更难 combines 更 “more” with 难 “difficult,” so it means “more difficult” or “harder” than under the relevant alternative. 更 marks a comparison, but the sentence does not state exactly what the comparison point is. 难 is the adjective carrying the meaning “difficult”; 更 does not mean “difficult” by itself. Contrast: 难 “difficult,” 更难 “more difficult.” 拿到 is a verb compound: 拿 “take/hold” plus 到, which indicates reaching the intended result. In this sentence, 拿到 refers to successfully getting hold of or reaching the relevant thing, matching the fixed translation’s “reach.” The compound differs from 拿 alone: 拿 can describe taking or holding, while 拿到 emphasizes that the result has been achieved. Example: 我终于拿到了钥匙。—“I finally got hold of the key.” Together, 这样就更难拿到了 means “That way, it becomes harder to reach” or, more literally, “That way, it becomes more difficult to get hold of it.” 这样 presents the method or arrangement, 就 links that arrangement to its consequence, 更难 expresses the increased difficulty, and 拿到 describes successfully reaching or obtaining the relevant thing. The specific referent is not identified in this sentence itself. The wording is neutral and reusable for explaining that an arrangement makes access or obtaining something more difficult.

不过 introduces a contrast with what came before. It commonly means “but” or “however” and is placed at the beginning here. Example: 不过,我同意。 — “However, I agree.” 你 is the second-person pronoun “you.” Modern Mandarin pronouns do not inflect for grammatical gender, and the plural form is 你们 when more than one person is meant. The fixed sentence addresses the listener as “you”; it does not identify any additional participant. 还是 means “still” here: despite the preceding contrast, the possibility in the rest of the sentence remains available. In other contexts, 还是 can also mean “or” in a question, but that is not its function here. Example: 他还是喜欢这个地方。 — “He still likes this place.” 可以 expresses ability or permission, depending on context. With the following verb 享受, it says that you can enjoy the festival. The form 可以 does not change for person or number. Example: 你可以休息。 — “You can rest.” 享受 is the verb “enjoy.” It is followed directly by what is enjoyed, here 这个节日. Mandarin verbs do not take English-style person or tense endings; time or aspect is shown by context or other markers when needed. Example: 我们享受音乐。 — “We enjoy music.” 这个 means “this” and points to a particular nearby or contextually identified thing. In Mandarin, 这 is the demonstrative and 个 is a common classifier; together they form the pattern 这 + 个 + noun. The demonstrative’s form does not identify the noun’s grammatical gender. Example: 这个问题很简单。 — “This question is very simple.” 节日 means “festival” or “holiday.” It is the noun selected by 这个, producing 这个节日, “this festival.” The noun itself does not receive a plural ending here; number is understood from context. Example: 这个节日很重要。 — “This festival is important.” Together, 不过 sets up a contrast, 你还是可以 says that you nevertheless retain the ability or permission to do something, and 享受这个节日 identifies that activity and its object. The complete meaning is: “But you can still enjoy the festival.”

  10. 我不想感到焦虑,只是想小心一点。

    只是
    just
    想
    want to
    小心

    a little
    More detail

我不想 means “I do not want to.” 想 is the verb “to want” and can be followed by another verb: 我想休息。 = “I want to rest.” The negative 不 comes before it: 我不想休息。 = “I do not want to rest.” Here 我 is the speaker, and 不想 expresses the speaker’s unwillingness, not a command to someone else. 感到 means “to feel” in the sense of experiencing a feeling or state. It is commonly followed by a feeling or condition: 感到害怕 = “feel afraid.” In this sentence, 感到 is the verb following 想, so 我不想感到…… means “I do not want to feel …”. 焦虑 means “anxious” here. It can describe an emotional state and follows 感到 naturally: 我感到焦虑。 = “I feel anxious.” The word can also be used in other contexts for anxiety or an anxious state, but here it describes what the speaker does not want to experience. 只是 means “just” or “only” and limits or softens the following statement. It introduces a clarification or contrast: 我只是累了。 = “I’m just tired.” Here it does not negate the earlier clause; it narrows the speaker’s wish to the more modest wish that follows. 想 in 想小心一点 again means “want to.” Repeating it is normal because the sentence has a second coordinated wish. The pattern 想 + verb is reusable: 她想学习。 = “She wants to study.” 小心 means “careful” or “to be careful.” In 小心一点, it functions as the action or state the speaker wants to adopt. Chinese does not need a separate verb equivalent to English “be” here: 小心一点 can mean “be a little more careful.” 一点 means “a little” or “slightly” in this position. After a descriptive word such as 小心, it softens the degree: 安静一点 = “a little quieter” or “be a little quieter.” It does not assert a counted quantity here. Together, 我不想感到焦虑 means “I don’t want to feel anxious.” 只是想小心一点 then clarifies the intended alternative: “I just want to be a little careful.” The complete utterance is therefore: “I don’t want to feel anxious, I just want to be a little careful.”

  11. 那我们整个下午都保持警惕,不必一直担心。

    More detail

那我们 begins with 那, meaning “then” or “in that case,” followed by 我们, “we/us.” Together, it introduces a suggestion or decision involving the speaker and at least one other person. 我们 does not itself show whether the listener is included beyond the context; here the translation supports the inclusive “let us/we.” Example: 那我们走吧。—“Then let’s go.” 整个 means “whole” or “entire.” It normally comes before the time or noun phrase whose full extent it describes. Here it modifies 下午, giving 整个下午 (“the whole afternoon”). Example: 我们整个晚上都在家。—“We stayed home the whole evening.” 下午 means “afternoon,” the period after noon and before evening. In 整个下午, it is the time span during which the following situation continues. 都 is an adverb meaning “all” or “in every part of the relevant range.” With the time span 整个下午, it marks the situation as holding throughout that span; it does not mean that there are multiple afternoons. Example: 他整个上午都在学习。—“He studied all morning.” 保持警惕 is a reusable verb-plus-object construction meaning “remain/stay alert.” 保持 means “maintain” or “keep,” while 警惕 means “alert” or “vigilant.” 保持 emphasizes continuing a state rather than entering it. Example: 夜里开车要保持警惕。—“You should stay alert when driving at night.” 不必 is a modal expression meaning “need not” or “do not have to.” It comes before the verb or verb phrase it affects, here 一直担心. It removes the necessity of the action; it is not the ordinary direct negation of 担心. Example: 你不必解释。—“You do not need to explain.” 一直 is an adverb meaning “continuously,” “all the time,” or “一直以来” in contexts that extend from an earlier point. Here it modifies 担心, emphasizing continued worrying rather than a single moment of worry. Example: 她一直在等你。—“She has been waiting for you all along.” 担心 is the verb “to worry” or “to be concerned.” In this sentence it is the action that is unnecessary to continue: 不必一直担心 means “need not keep worrying.” Example: 别担心。—“Don’t worry.” Putting the parts together, 那我们 introduces the speaker’s suggestion, 整个下午 sets the complete afternoon as the time span, and 都保持警惕 says that the alert state should continue throughout it. 不必一直担心 then says that continuous worrying is not necessary. The whole utterance therefore means: “Then let us stay alert without worrying all afternoon.”
